Carolee Schneemann

Carolee Schneemann, Eye Body: 36 Transformative Actions, 1963 Schneemann's body acts as a canvas or just another material in a mixed media artwork. She uses paing, clue, fur, feathers, glass, plastic and garden snakes to adorn her body. This piece explores Carolee as the artist behind the creation, but also the creation. She uses the studio space to create a messy, violent, yet seductive atmosphere to show that even with the constructed material, her body can remain erotic. She photographs herself with 35mm black and white film. At first I found these photographs as shocking and violent, but after looking at Schneemann's facial expressions and positions, she really does portray herself as sexy amongst the chaotic settings. These raw and animalistic photographs get her point across by not being too vulgar because they are contained to paper rather than an installation in front of the audience's face. http://www.cepagallery.org/exhibitions/workspace/schneemann.html
